With the qualitative determination of some measuring size values during the printing process, the standardization is enabled which leads to greater productivity and quality. During the basic graphic production many factors have influence on the formation of the final print. Important are the materials (printing substrates, inks, dampening solutions …) printing machines (construction, machine production, vibrations …) and working environment (temperature, air humidity…). During the preparation of the printing machines as well as during the managing process, numerous measuring instruments are used individually, as well as parts of the printing machines. Simply said they are defined as the peripheral printing units and serve directly for leading, monitoring and control of the printing process. The majority of the measuring methods are defined by standards for graphic industry and the most important thing is to present them.
The work of the people who lead and organize the basic production is inconceivable without the adapted measuring equipment. The working principles, as well as the construction of the measuring equipment (scales, densitometers, spectrophotometers, comparators, thermometers, pH meters, conductometers, hygrometers …) will be dealt with in details. The used measuring values are defined by the International SI units (System International Units). The specific feature of the printing process demands the application of the specific units except the basic SI units. These are: the mechanic units, the optic ones, the electronic ones, the printing and informatics SI units. 24 such units are directly applied in the printing technology (roll tension, blanket hardness, grammage, contrast, ink temperature …)and they will be defined in details.
